Painting Hardwood floor

1. First I started with cleaning out the room
2. Disconnected the radiator and moved it outside the room.
3. Patched holes and cracks as good as possible with wood filler. (whatever brand)
4. Sand floor. I started with a medium-grit paper, since thats the one I had laying around. Next time I would use a more heavier grit paper.
5. Vacuumed twice!
6. Apply primer. I used two coats of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3. This was good since it filled up the cracks in between the wood.
7. Waited 24 hours. I wanted to sand once more but after two coats of primer the floor felt smooth enough.
8. Apply one coat of paint. After a few days of heavy discussions I made the decision to have them painted black, Behr “Raven” Black. I used a brush for the corners and a roller for the rest.
9. Waited 24 hours and installed the molding around the baseboard. Once that was done I painted the baseboard and molding Swiss Coffee (Vaspar)… in the process I painted all the molding around the windows and doors too.
10. Waited 24 hours and painted another coat of “Raven” black.
11. I had some leftover Hammered Silver (Rustoleum) and painted the radiator silver.

The floor took 2 days to completly dry. I’m very happy with the endresult, a modern, clean looking room… now I need to buy some decorations!

Marimekko

I have been looking at the Marimekko fabrics for months. I really want some curtains been made from a Marimekko design. One think i can’t and thats sewing, im trying to find premade curtain with the Marimekko fabrics but that seems not goin to happen. So one of my missions is to figure out how to create curtain without destroying expensive fabrics. Here is a list of most Marimekko fabrics.

Steam Radiators

It has been quite for a while and fall has begon. This means time to clean the furnace and test our steam radiators (from 1936). I try to find information on how to balance steam radiators and since its a dying technology there is not much info out there. We have hissing and overheated radiators so i know i need to balance the air vents on every radiator. I think this a job by itself and im spending hours tweaking the air vents. Replacing and finding faulty air vents is like working a crime scene, here is a list of Hoffman air vents now you tell me which one goes where…

Tree Surgery

So this weekend we had a little accident with one of our huge trees in the backjard. After a afternoon of heavy rain and wind a treebranch broke of the tree and fell in our neighboors driveway. We called the tree to remove the broken brances.

Little bathroom makeover

Project started out with only painting the walls…(color Fairmont Penthouse Stone)

Before i even know i had and empty bathroom and was replacing almost everything. When i have time i will write down what i did. It involved Ikea countertops, rustoleum metal finish, krud kutter and a new toilet. Here as some before and after photos, minus cleanup.

Convert sunroom into a bedroom

Since the basement is not gonna happen before my parents come to visit we deceided to convert the sunroom into the temporary bedroom. Took out the ugly green carpet, painted the walls with leftover chocolate froth and place some nice looking vinyl tile from Armstrong on top of the wooden floor. Curtains from IKEA.

Next weekend laborday weekend will be a nice weekend with good mattress sales. We have an old dresser that i will stain this week, since i have enough stain leftover from staining the diningroom. Find some nice lighting and the room should be all ready.

Kitchen Backsplash

Finally today the mosiac tile came in from Cooltiles.com. Extremly pleased with how the tile looks.

Saturday tileday.

Today i went to Lowes to buy the neccecary tools and materials; white, thinset adhesive, nonsanded grout. Installation tools include a 3/16′ X 5/32′ V-notched trowel, a piece of wood such as a short piece of 2 x 4 to be used as a beating block, a grout sponge, a rubberized grout float, a power drill, a mixing attachment.

The kitchen looks so nice and clean. Tomorrow grouting!

Little projects

Rest of the week i was to busy to do to much work at the house. I spent some time at Ikea and found this window frosting to put on windows. Since our frontdoor had these ugly shades i thought it would be good ideas to replace these with some cheap frosting. This would bring more daylight in the livingroom and privacy in the evening.

Same week i ordered some cheap diningroom furniture from Target. Yes Target, since my parents are coming in a few weeks i wanted to have a quick fix on furniture and after some research Target has the best deal with free shipping. I’ll ad some links later. Eventually we’ll get some nicer diningroom furniture in a lighter color.

That same week the JCPenny Shavannah roman shades came in ($17 each and free shipping who can beat that price)

This weekend the kitchen tile should be coming in, can’t wait to start tiling!
Oh and i updated the ToDo List.

Water Leak

After i bought all materials to remodel the basement we had a leak in the main water supply. Water was flooding the basement and i had to call United Water to shut off the main water supply. To my suprise this took them 3 hours to come to the house! I was happy the leak was small and i could contain the water. Next day we tried to find a plumber to do an emergency repair, which was another problem, but eventually we found a kickass plumber. This and that we had to wait that same week for inspectors to approve the Central Air installation the remodeling is scheduled for a later date.

Power Outage

Since we had a power outage in our area (big thunderstorms), i finished painting (moss green) the stairwell and hallway and put up some new roman shades. And Cat made some photos from the yard and garden.

I also updated the ToDo list.
